Crimson Desert map size: how big Pywel is, in km² and in ride time
The Crimson Desert map covers roughly 80 to 125 km² of walkable land, depending on who measured it and what they counted. Pearl Abyss has never published a figure of its own; the publisher's only statements are that Pywel is "at least twice as big" as Skyrim's playable area and "larger than the map of Red Dead Redemption 2", and every player measurement agrees with both. The firmest anchor is in the game itself: the Harmonious Hooves 4 horse challenge asks you to ride from Sunset Valley in southern Hernand to Varnia at the northern edge of the Crimson Desert in under 40 minutes, and a decent horse does it in about 25. Everything below is an estimate, and each one is labelled with where it came from.
The estimates, and who made them
Five figures circulate. They look contradictory until you notice that each one counts a different thing.
- 80 km². The pre-release estimate, scaled off the official world map shown in Pearl Abyss's footage. It appeared on r/CrimsonDesert in early March 2026 (the same post claimed six hours to cross the continent on foot) and a NeoGAF thread redid the calculation against the official map and landed in the same place. This is the figure behind the "twice Skyrim" line, since Skyrim's playable area is about 37 km².
- 80 to 110 km². The range most press guides settled on after launch. It is the same 80 with a margin added for coastline and the parts of the map players had not yet reached.
- About 125 km². The estimate players on the Steam forums were quoting by late April 2026, once the whole map had been uncovered and traced. This is the best current figure for land you can actually stand on.
- 123 to 150 km² playable, about 200 km² total. Method's post-release breakdown. The larger number is the full extent of the world including sea, cliffs and terrain you can see but not reach.
- 256 km². Quoted by a few guide sites without a method. It matches a bounding box around the whole map, water included, and nothing else.
Read together they say one thing: walkable Pywel is somewhere between 80 and 125 km², anything above that is counting water and scenery, and the two official comparisons hold under every estimate. Skyrim is about 37 km², Red Dead Redemption 2 about 75, Elden Ring's Lands Between about 79. Crimson Desert sits above all three. Those comparison figures are player measurements as well, since none of those publishers released an area either.
What Pearl Abyss has said
Nothing in square kilometres, and the Steam listing and patch notes stay silent on area. The scale statements all come from one person: Will Powers, Pearl Abyss's director of PR, in interviews around January 2026.
- "The world's at least twice as big as the open world, the playable area, of Skyrim. It's larger than the map of Red Dead Redemption 2."
- About two hours to ride from one end of the game world to the other.
- "The continent of Pywel is absolutely massive, but size doesn't really matter if there's nothing to do."
The two-hour ride and the 25-minute challenge time are both true. Powers was describing a ride at the pace you actually travel while playing, stopping for what you find. The challenge is a gallop on a levelled horse with nothing in between.
The in-game map splits Pywel into five regions: Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert, with the Abyss as a separate realm reached skyward. Patch notes cut finer than that, naming territories such as Tommaso, Urdavah, Varnia and Calphade when they place wagon workshops or fast travel points, which is why region counts differ from wiki to wiki. Patch 1.03.00 also added around fifty fast travel points, so the distance you cover on foot in practice is a fraction of the area above.
How to measure it yourself
The horse challenges are the closest thing to an official ruler, because Pearl Abyss chose the endpoints.
Harmonious Hooves 4 runs from Sunset Valley, in the far south of Hernand, to Varnia, in the far north of the Crimson Desert. The limit is 40 minutes and the run resets if you dismount. With a level 5 horse (Royler, the legendary mount, has the best starting speed and stamina) it takes about 25 minutes. That is the long diagonal of the continent, corner to corner, so it is also the number to compare against other games' ride-across times.
Harmonious Hooves 6, Silvermoon Tradehouse to Vellua in 10 minutes, is the tightest of the travel challenges and gives you the scale of a single region rather than the whole map.
If you want a figure in square kilometres rather than minutes, do what the community did: open the full world map at maximum zoom, use the distance between two known fast travel points as the scale bar, and trace the coastline. You will land between 80 and 125 depending on how you treat inlets and cliffs, which is exactly the spread above. The one thing to keep out of the count is the Abyss: it is a second layer above the surface, and no area figure includes it.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the Crimson Desert map in km²?
About 80 to 125 km² of walkable land by player measurements, or up to 200 km² if you count sea and unreachable terrain. Pearl Abyss has never published an official figure, so treat every number as an estimate.
Is Crimson Desert bigger than Skyrim and Red Dead Redemption 2?
Yes on both counts. Pearl Abyss's PR director said the world is at least twice Skyrim's playable area and larger than RDR2's map, and every community estimate agrees: Skyrim is about 37 km², RDR2 about 75, Pywel at least 80.
How long does it take to ride across the Crimson Desert map?
About 25 minutes corner to corner at a gallop on a level 5 horse; the in-game Harmonious Hooves 4 challenge sets a 40-minute limit for that exact route. Riding at a normal exploring pace, Pearl Abyss's own estimate is around two hours.
How many regions does Pywel have?
Five on the in-game map: Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert, plus the Abyss as a separate skyward realm. Patch notes also use finer territory names such as Tommaso, Urdavah and Varnia, which is why some wikis count more.
