GTA 6 map size: what is officially known

Atualizado 2026-09-01

Rockstar Games has not published a size for the Grand Theft Auto VI map, and no official figure exists in square miles or square kilometres. What the company has confirmed is the setting: the state of Leonida, with Vice City at its heart, shown across two official trailers and the regions named on the game's own website. Every area figure circulating today is a fan estimate, not a Rockstar statement.

What Rockstar has actually confirmed

Two pieces of official material carry almost everything that is known about the map today.

Trailer 1, published in December 2023, introduced the setting and the return to Vice City. Trailer 2, published in May 2025, showed far more of the surrounding state: coastline, wetlands, inland towns and a long stretch of open water.

Alongside the second trailer, Rockstar's official Grand Theft Auto VI website named the regions of Leonida. That list is the closest thing to a map legend that exists right now:

  • Vice City
  • Leonida Keys
  • Grassrivers
  • Port Gellhorn
  • Mount Kalaga
  • Ambrosia

The list tells you the map holds one large city plus several separate outlying areas. It does not tell you how far apart they sit, how much of the space between them is playable, or how much of the coastline is reachable by boat.

Why there is no official number

Rockstar has never published the area of a Grand Theft Auto map. Not for San Andreas in 2004, not for Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, and not for this one. The figures that circulate for older games were produced by players after release, in one of two ways: by driving to the extremes of the playable area and reading in-game coordinates, or by stitching the in-game map into a single image and scaling it against a known distance.

Both methods are reasonable and both are approximate. Two careful measurements of the same map routinely differ by a third, because the answer depends on decisions nobody states out loud. Does the ocean count? Does the border terrain you can reach but never build on count? Do interiors count? Change one of those and the number changes with it.

That is why several different areas are quoted for the same game, each presented as fact. None of them came from the publisher.

What the trailers can and cannot tell you

Trailer footage is cut for effect, which makes it poor evidence of distance. A helicopter shot that pans from a beach to a swamp says nothing about how long that drive takes on the ground. Estimates built from landmark spacing in trailers have been wrong before, in both directions.

Two things in the official material are still worth something. First, the region list implies travel between separate population centres rather than one city with a green belt around it. Second, the second trailer holds sustained flight and boat movement over open water and wetland, which suggests real distance between the Keys and the mainland.

Neither of those is a measurement. They are shape, not scale.

How the size will be measured after release

Once the game is out, map size stops being a rumour and becomes an empirical question. The method this site uses on every hub is published so the result can be checked:

  1. Coordinate extents. Record in-game coordinates at the four edges of the playable area.
  2. Timed traverse. Drive and fly a fixed route across the map at a constant speed and record the time.
  3. Scaled stitch. Stitch our own screenshots of the in-game map into one image and scale it against the coordinate extents.
  4. Stated boundaries. Publish three numbers rather than one: land only, land plus navigable water, and the full coordinate rectangle.

The method matters more than the headline figure. A number with no stated method cannot be compared against any other number, which is exactly why the existing estimates disagree.

What this hub will publish, and when

The interactive map for this hub goes live at release, on 19 November 2026. The measured size lands with it, or shortly after, depending on how quickly the playable area can be traversed end to end.

Until then, this page carries no estimate. If you find a square-mile figure for this map anywhere, including here, check whether the source states a method and a boundary rule. If it does not, treat it as a guess.

Perguntas frequentes

Has Rockstar announced how big the GTA 6 map is?
No. Rockstar Games has published no area figure for the Grand Theft Auto VI map in any unit, and it has never published one for an earlier game in the series either.
Where do the square-mile figures in videos and articles come from?
They are fan estimates built from trailer footage and comparisons with older games. Some are careful work, none are official, and they disagree with one another by wide margins.
When will a measured GTA 6 map size be available?
After the 19 November 2026 release, once the playable area can be traversed and in-game coordinates read. This hub will publish the measurement together with the method used to produce it.
Which regions of Leonida has Rockstar named so far?
The official Grand Theft Auto VI website lists Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Mount Kalaga and Ambrosia. Their sizes and the distances between them have not been stated.
