GTA 6 map size: twice GTA 5, in Rockstar's own words
The Grand Theft Auto VI map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, gave those figures to the YouTuber TGG at a preview event, and they went public on 27 August 2026 alongside Rockstar's 26-minute Extended Look. He added two more: Vice City on its own is twice the size of Los Santos, and Vice City counted with its suburbs is eleven times the size of Los Santos and the areas around it. No figure in square kilometres has ever come out of Rockstar, for this game or any earlier one, so the conversion is where the estimating starts. GTA 5's world measures about 76 km² by the player count everyone quotes, which puts Leonida near 150 km², roughly 58 square miles.
Rockstar's four numbers
Everything official about the scale of Leonida comes from one conversation. Rob Nelson sat down with TGG before Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026, and gave four comparisons:
- The whole map is twice the size of GTA 5's map.
- The whole map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's map.
- Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos.
- Vice City with its suburbs is eleven times the size of Los Santos and its surroundings.
Rockstar has only done this once before. In 2013 it said GTA 5's world was bigger than Grand Theft Auto IV, San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption put together, and it never followed that with an area. The square-kilometre figures people quote for those games were produced by players with a stopwatch and a screenshot stitcher, years after release.
The eleven-times line is the one that gets misread as a map figure. Rockstar has not said what it counts, and the reporting around it reads it as built-up area and density rather than total world area, which is how it sits next to a two-times figure without contradicting it.
What that is in square kilometres
No Rockstar map has ever shipped with an area attached, so every kilometre figure below starts from a player measurement of an older game.
The count that circulates most for Grand Theft Auto V splits the world into 48.15 km² of land and 27.69 km² of water, 75.84 km² together, about 29 square miles. Close to 30% of the playable space is ocean. Double it and Leonida lands around 150 km², of which something like 96 km² would be dry.
Red Dead Redemption 2 measures roughly 75 km² by the same kind of count, and that is where the two multiples start pulling apart. If GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 sit within a kilometre or two of each other, no single world can be twice one and three times the other. The two sides must be counting different things, and the likeliest split is land against land plus water: three times Red Dead 2's land is close to twice GTA 5's total. Until someone drives the edges of Leonida and reads the in-game coordinates, treat 150 km² as the floor and 225 km² as the ceiling.
One more thing moves the baseline. GTA 5's map is no longer the 2013 map. Cayo Perico arrived in GTA Online on 15 December 2020 as the first map expansion in that game's history, so a multiple of "GTA 5" depends on which GTA 5 you mean.
The ground Leonida covers
Rockstar's own site names six places, each with a one-line pitch, published in May 2025 with the second trailer.
- Vice City, "Everything in Excess". The state's one big city and the centre of gravity for the whole map.
- Leonida Keys, "Gateway to Paradise". A tropical archipelago off the southern coast, with boat parties, dive bars such as The Rusty Anchor and reefs holding giant turtles.
- Grassrivers, "Welcome to the Wetlands". Marshland where buildings on stilts give way to gators and mangroves.
- Port Gellhorn, "Live Hard". A dead resort strip of cheap motels, shut-down attractions and empty malls.
- Ambrosia, "Keeping Leonida Sweet". Sugar country anchored by the Allied Crystal refinery, with a biker gang supplying almost everything else.
- Mount Kalaga National Park, "Wild, Wild Country". Forest on the state's northern fringe, for hunting, fishing and going off the grid.
For area, the shape of that list carries more than the names do. An archipelago and a wetland both mean navigable water inside the playable space rather than a rim of ocean around it, which is a different thing from GTA 5's single landmass with sea on every side. A national park at the northern edge and a city at the south means the long axis of the map is a drive between separate places rather than a lap around one.
Fifty to sixty hours across it
Nelson also put a clock on the world, which is the number that decides how big a map actually feels. He described the story as roughly comparable in length to Red Dead Redemption 2, the 50 to 60 hour neighbourhood, and said his own playthrough with the optional material ran to about 80 hours. Grand Theft Auto V's main story averages around 32 hours on HowLongToBeat across its 69 missions, with 80 hours or more for full completion.
The Extended Look is the best evidence of what fills the space: 26 minutes captured on PS5, moving through rooftop bars, a satirical television network's headquarters, police who identify you by face and by vehicle, scuba diving off the Keys, parasailing, weightlifting, mini golf.
Larger multiples than Rockstar's two-times are circulating from fan reconstructions of the map. Those are built on the leaked development build, so they are left out here.
Häufige Fragen
How big is the GTA 6 map in km²?
Around 150 km², about 58 square miles, working from Rockstar's statement that Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5's map and the player measurement of GTA 5 at 75.84 km². Rockstar has published no area figure of its own, so the kilometres are arithmetic on top of a fan count.
Has Rockstar confirmed the GTA 6 map size?
In multiples, yes. On 27 August 2026 Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, said the map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. The company has still never published an area in square miles or kilometres for any Grand Theft Auto.
How many regions does Leonida have?
Six are named on Rockstar's official site: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. How many towns sit inside each of them has not been stated.
How long does the GTA 6 story take?
Rob Nelson put it in the same range as Red Dead Redemption 2, roughly 50 to 60 hours, and said his own run came to about 80 hours once optional content was included. GTA 5's main story averages about 32 hours by comparison.
Why do fan estimates give a bigger GTA 6 map than Rockstar does?
Because they measure a reconstruction rather than the game, and the reconstructions with the largest multiples draw on the leaked development build. Rockstar's own two-times figure is lower than the numbers circulating from those projects.
