Subnautica 2 map size: what the game has shipped so far
Unknown Worlds has published no size figure for the Subnautica 2 map, in square kilometres or in any other unit. What has been published is more useful than a number: the game has been playable since Early Access launched on 14 May 2026, its Steam listing describes the current build as holding "several biomes", and the studio's own roadmap commits to expanding the world, biomes, creatures and resources over an Early Access period it expects to run about two to three years. The map you can swim today is a real, measurable world, and a smaller one than the map at 1.0.
What the studio has actually said
Four statements from Unknown Worlds and the Steam listing bear directly on map size, and none of them is a number:
- Early Access since 14 May 2026, at 08:00 PDT / 15:00 UTC, on Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox.
- The current build holds "several biomes", some narrative and a variety of creatures and craftables. That is the store page's own description of the state of the game, not a summary of it.
- The full version is planned to add more biomes, creatures, craftables and narrative. More world, explicitly, not just more polish on this one.
- Early Access is expected to run about two to three years, judged by the studio's previous Early Access titles.
Put together, those say the playable area is a moving target by design. A studio that plans to keep adding biomes for two to three years is not going to publish a headline size, because the figure would be wrong within a patch cycle.
The world is measurably bigger than it was at launch
This is the part that a single size figure hides. Two content updates have shipped since Early Access opened, and both changed what there is to swim through.
Early Access 1.1, "Adaptive Measures" (8 July 2026) added two more Biolabs, one in Coral Gardens and one in Axum Ruins, raised the number of Biomods a player can unlock from four to six, and adjusted resource placement: silver, among others, gained spawns in Coral Gardens.
Early Access 1.2, "Buddy System" (19 August 2026) was largely a co-op update (proximity voice chat, player revives, trading, two more playable characters), but its notes touch regions across the map, from the Shallows and Root Canyon to the Blight Zone and Sparse Plains.
Neither update was announced as a map expansion, and neither published a new area figure. That is exactly why "how big is the map" is the wrong question to ask an Early Access ocean: the answer changes underneath you, and it changes without a headline.
Depth is the axis that a square-kilometre figure throws away
Even if Unknown Worlds published a surface footprint tomorrow, it would describe a fraction of the space.
Subnautica worlds are built with depth as a real axis. The playable volume runs from a sunlit shelf down through progressively darker layers, and the named regions in the patch notes sit at different points on that gradient: the Shallows near the surface, thermal and ruin areas further down. Two maps with an identical surface area can differ several times over in how much there is to visit.
The second thing a footprint hides is reachability. On this map the question is not how far a place is but whether your current equipment survives the trip to it: the Tadpole submersible, the Biomods you have unlocked, and how far you are from a safe surfacing point. A region three hundred metres down and a region three hundred metres sideways are not the same distance.
So the number worth publishing is not one number. It is coordinate extents, a depth range, and the build both were taken on.
How this hub measures it
The map on this hub is surveyed by players, which makes size a thing we can report rather than repeat. The method, and what gets published with every figure:
- Coordinate extents at the edges of the playable area, read in game rather than estimated from a screenshot.
- Depth range, from the shallowest surface point to the deepest point anything can currently reach.
- Surface footprint, from a scaled stitch of our own in-game screenshots, never an asset pulled from the game files.
- A build stamp on all three, because "Adaptive Measures" and "Buddy System" both moved things and neither announced it as a map change.
When a figure on this page has no build stamp next to it, treat it as missing rather than as current. And if you are playing now and want to file coordinates from the edges you have reached, contributor access is open on this hub.
Frequently asked questions
- How big is the Subnautica 2 map in square kilometres?
- Unknown Worlds has published no figure, and no measurement taken today would survive long. The world is still being extended through Early Access, so any area quoted has to name the build it came from.
- Is the Subnautica 2 world bigger than the original Subnautica?
- Neither world has an official area figure, so there is nothing to compare directly. Subnautica 2 is set on a different planet and is still growing, which makes any comparison made today a comparison against a moving target.
- Will the map get bigger during Early Access?
- Yes. The published Early Access roadmap commits to expanding the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools and vehicles in larger updates, alongside story progression, though it carries no dates and is marked subject to change.
- How many biomes are in the current Subnautica 2 build?
- No count has been published. The Steam listing says the Early Access build contains "several biomes", and update notes have named more than a dozen regions, but a named region in patch notes is not necessarily a distinct biome.
