Subnautica 2 map size: 3 by 3 km on the surface, 750 m down

Actualizado 2026-09-05

Players measure the Subnautica 2 world at roughly 3 km by 3 km on the surface, about 9 km², and its deepest floor you can stand on sits at 750 m at the bottom of Root Canyon. Root Canyon is also the far edge of the current build: it lies about 2,170 m due east of the Lifepod, the longest run anyone has filed. Unknown Worlds has published no area figure of its own and has kept adding to the world since Early Access opened on 14 May 2026, so those numbers describe the 1.2 build of September 2026 rather than the finished game. Each one below is a distance, a depth or a date somebody read off the game.

How far it is from the Lifepod to everything else

Subnautica 2 has no map screen. It does have a coordinate readout: pause the game and your position prints in the lower right as three numbers, and F1 opens a debug overlay with the same reading live. Every distance here comes off that readout.

GameWith surveyed the reachable landmarks on 21 July 2026 and published straight-line distances from the Lifepod:

  • Shallows, about 70 m southeast
  • North Raceway, about 222 m southeast
  • Spider Dome, about 235 m west-southwest
  • Tufa Towers, about 260 m south
  • Plateaus, about 370 m north
  • Lead Zone, about 380 m northeast
  • Graveyard, about 540 m east-southeast
  • Axum Observatory, about 1,080 m east
  • Power Plant, about 1,800 m east
  • Root Canyon, about 2,170 m east

Two things fall out of that column. Seven of the ten sit inside a 600 m radius of the Lifepod, which is why the opening hours feel cramped. And the world runs east far more than it runs anywhere else, so the 3 by 3 km figure players settled on after twenty-odd hours in the build is a box drawn around an uneven shape rather than the shape itself. Swim far enough in any direction and red warning lines appear, then the Void, then a Shiver Leviathan.

How deep Subnautica 2 goes

750 m is the floor. The depth bands recorded for the current build read like this:

  • Lead Zone, 34 to 65 m
  • South Raceway, 0 to 85 m
  • Necrolei Hills, 0 to 100 m
  • Plateaus, 23 to 119 m
  • Dolerite Spires, 0 to 128 m
  • Shallows, 0 to 224 m
  • Sparse Plains, 0 to 250 m
  • Graveyard, 0 to 266 m
  • Karakorum Metal Farms, 0 to 500 m
  • Overgrown Ruins, 0 to 600 m
  • Root Canyon, 364 to 750 m

Below that there is one more number, and it belongs to nothing you would call a place. The Void column reads down to about 3,100 m, holds no resources at all, and answers a visit with a Shiver Leviathan. That is the out-of-bounds rather than the deep end.

Depth is also the gate, which is why a surface area on its own tells you little. The Graveyard and the Axum Observatory need the Mk. 1 depth module, good to roughly 340 m. Root Canyon and the Power Plant need Mk. 2. The Lead Zone caves want a Rebreather. How much of those 9 km² you can reach on a given day is set by your equipment, not by how far you are willing to swim.

Against Subnautica and Below Zero

The first Subnautica sits inside a 4 by 4 km box, and the crater you actually play in is a circle of roughly 2 km radius with the Lava Lakes at 1,700 m. Below Zero cut about 42% of that surface and stopped near 1,000 m.

Line the three up on today's build and Subnautica 2 comes third on both axes: less surface than the finished crater, a shallower floor than either predecessor. That is the comparison people mean when they say the Early Access map feels small, and it is a fair one.

It also compares a four-month-old game with two finished ones. Unknown Worlds measures the Early Access launch against the earlier games' Early Access launches rather than their release builds, and on that footing Subnautica 2 shipped the largest day-one world the series has had. The studio has said the finished game will exceed both.

The axis where the sequel is already ahead is travel. The original crater was built around swimming and a Seamoth, with the far wall a few hundred metres out. This one puts 2 km between the Lifepod and Root Canyon and gives you the Tadpole, which turns a gathering run into a route with a fuel budget.

What each update has added

Four releases have changed the world since 14 May 2026.

  1. Hotfixes 1 to 3 (20 May, 22 May, 1 June 2026). Stability and bug work, no new ground.
  2. Early Access 1.1, "Adaptive Measures" (8 July 2026). Two more Biolabs, one in the Coral Gardens and one in the Axum Ruins, the Biomod ceiling raised from four to six, and resources shuffled: silver gained spawns in the Coral Gardens.
  3. Early Access 1.2, "Buddy System" (19 August 2026). A co-op release at heart, with proximity voice chat, revives, trading and two more playable characters. Its notes still reach across the map: the Graveyard, Tufa Zone, thermal area, North Coral Gardens, Root Canyon, Sparse Plains, Anemone Hills, the Observatory and the Power Plant all got fixes.
  4. Next. The published roadmap previews a region built around the Collector Leviathan, northeast of the Coral Gardens. Cross the current boundary there and its terrain is already in the build, empty of creatures and resources.

None of those was announced as a map expansion and none came with an area figure. The measurements above will move again when that region opens, which is the only forecast worth making about the size of an Early Access ocean.

Preguntas frecuentes

How big is the Subnautica 2 map?

Roughly 3 km by 3 km of surface, about 9 km², in the September 2026 Early Access build. Unknown Worlds has published no official area, so that figure comes from players who traced the boundary using the in-game coordinate readout.

How deep can you go in Subnautica 2?

750 m, the floor of Root Canyon, is the deepest ground in the current build, and reaching it needs the Mk. 2 depth module. The Void past the boundary reads down to about 3,100 m but holds nothing and spawns a Shiver Leviathan.

Is the Subnautica 2 map bigger than the original Subnautica?

Not yet. Subnautica's crater covers about 2 km of radius inside a 4 by 4 km box and bottoms out at 1,700 m, against roughly 3 by 3 km and 750 m here. Unknown Worlds says the finished sequel will exceed both earlier games.

How far is Root Canyon from the Lifepod?

About 2,170 m due east, measured off the in-game coordinate display in July 2026. It is the longest run in the current build, with the Power Plant at about 1,800 m east and the Axum Observatory at about 1,080 m east on the way.

How do you see your coordinates in Subnautica 2?

Pause the game and your position appears in the lower right as three numbers, X, Y and Z. F1 opens a debug overlay with the same reading live. Community surveys record distance and depth that way, since the game has no map screen.
